Remote monitoring technology pushing analoge dial-up aside


Remote monitoring is now an absolute necessity for certain companies. In the world of water and purification, where distances between pumping stations, treatment installations and central office are considerable, telemetry has been around for years. This technique, mostly based on slow, analogue dial-up connections, is gradually being pushed aside by IP communication or internet communication.

Regardless of the location, a customer will want a broken-down installation to be troubleshoot quickly and running as quickly as possible. Remote monitoring through the internet is an ideal, low-cost and fast solution.

Logisticon’s Piotr Klimczak, internal advisor on industrial automation, is an expert through experience. He sees great advantages in remote monitoring:

« Mobile water treatment is a part of our business. For this, we build complete purification solutions and transport them to the customer, where if so desired they can operate on site unmanned. As we take care of the maintenance, it’s good to be able to dial up to the control system. Up until a couple of years ago, we still did all communication through GSM. The speed of this was of course not so great.

I then did some electronic research: At first we investigated communication via UMTS. But since modems were still not available in industrial quality for this at that time, it was not an option. In the end we arrived at the eWON industrial router.

These products are perhaps a bit more expensive, but the eWON is much more than just a modem.

By introducing this device, we moved over to IP communication. This means we can contact and communicate with the installation. Our customers gain access to our installation but not access to our network.»

Multiple ways to connect


By far most of the company rental installations are built without extensive control systems. Where extensive monitoring and controls systems are required, these are now equipped with the eWON 2005CD. Connecting a PLC poses no problems. For communicating with the outside world, a cable from the customer’s network to the device is the ideal and most cost-effective solution. Where such a network does not exist, there is a telephone connection with which the eWON can communicate. A third solution is a wireless connection via GPRS, UMTS or HSxPA.

Conclusion


Klimczak sees even more advantages. « It is useful for Logistic on to use the device as from the point of view of the PLC each type of eW ON is the same. Logisticon uses, among other things, T-Box PLC for the control system. Another type is sometimes chosen at the custome r’s request, such as the Siemens S7-300.

Another advantage of internet communication with eWON is that the learning curve is not steep; you can quickly start working and get to grips with the most important functions. Our maintenance staff and the customers themselves are positive about the speed. There’s no way they want to go back to communication via slow GSM. A porti on of the users also work from home, and from there or anywhere else can now easily retrieve procedure data and manage the installation, whether it is in the Netherlands or abroad.»
